Expert Explains the Benefits of Heating Patches and Pads for Period Pain Relief

Many people experience menstrual cramps, with symptoms ranging from abdominal pain to back pain and general discomfort. There are numerous ways to combat menstrual cramps, among which hot water bottles and heating pads have become popular among women due to their ease of use. But how do they relieve pain and discomfort and how can they be used? To find out, we  spoke to Dr Lakshmi Prasanna, Obstetrician-Gynaecologist, Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada . She listed out the science behind heating pads, their benefits, uses and their use during menstruation.

Benefits of Heating Pads and Patches

A 2018 study found that heat can be effective in reducing pain, and when used in conjunction with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), heat can shorten the time it takes to feel significant pain relief. Apply heat to the lower abdomen or back at a temperature of about 39°C (102°F) for 8 to 12 hours. Dr. Prasanna lists the benefits of heating pads and heating patches as follows:

Pain relief

Menstrual pain

Heating pads and patches provide direct pain relief by relaxing the muscles around the abdomen, which creates heat in the area to help the uterine muscles contract, which causes cramps.

Improves blood flow

Increasing blood flow to painful areas reduces the buildup of pain-causing substances in the body and promotes healing through heat therapy.

Non-invasive and drug-free

“Unlike medications, heating patches and patches can help control menstrual pain without surgery or medication, so these methods are suitable for those who don’t want to take medication or have experienced side effects from painkillers,” says Dr Prasanna.

Convenience

Heating pads are small and can be worn discreetly under clothing to provide uninterrupted comfort throughout the day. Although not portable, electric warmers are convenient for use at home.

Scientific evidence

Heat therapy

“Scientific studies support the effectiveness of heat therapy for menstrual pain. “Studies have shown that using a heating pad or compress during menstruation can significantly reduce pain and increase comfort,” adds Dr Prasanna. Heat works in the following ways:

  • Muscle relaxation: Heat helps the smooth muscles of the uterus relax, reducing the contractions that cause cramps.
  • Stimulation of heat receptors: The application of heat stimulates the heat receptors in the skin, which send a signal to the brain that blocks all pain sensations.
  • Increased Blood Circulation: Increased blood circulation helps remove inflammatory substances and delivers oxygen and nutrients to injured areas, reducing pain and promoting recovery.

How do I use a heating pad or patch?

Heating pad

Heating Patch

“To use a heating patch, remove the liner and apply the adhesive side to your lower abdomen or back, depending on where the pain is. These patches usually provide heat for eight to 12 hours, so you can use them throughout the day to relieve pain. However, make sure your skin is clean and dry before application, and do not use on skin with a rash or breakage,” explains Dr Prasanna.

Heating pad

If you use a heating pad, you should place it on your abdomen or lower back on a high or low setting to prevent burns. Remember to take a break every 15-20 minutes to prevent overheating.

When using a heating pad, make sure it is on medium or low heat, or you may get burned. Also, avoid sleeping with the heating pad on as this can lead to severe burns. Also, avoid activities that may cause heat to build up, such as lying down with the heating pad on.

Conclusion

“Tampons and heating pads are a safe, effective and convenient way to manage discomfort associated with menstruation,” concludes Dr Prasanna. Their ability to provide targeted pain relief without the use of medication has made them popular among women seeking comfort during their periods. As with any treatment, it is important to follow the directions for use and take the necessary precautions to avoid side effects.”
