Research has shown that women with PCOS have higher levels of inflammation in their bodies. This chronic inflammation is thought to be a major contributor to the symptoms of PCOS. One of the main causes of inflammation in PCOS is insulin resistance, a condition in which the body does not respond effectively to insulin. This not only leads to elevated insulin levels and hormonal imbalance, but also promotes fat storage, especially around the abdomen. This excess fat exacerbates inflammation, creating a vicious cycle that worsens symptoms.
“Chronic inflammation creates a vicious cycle that leads to obesity, increased insulin resistance and subsequent inflammation, making it difficult for women to effectively manage PCOS,” adds Dr. Datta.

How inflammation impacts PCOS symptoms
Chronic inflammation can worsen some symptoms of PCOS. It can impede weight loss, increase fatigue, worsen skin conditions like acne, and even cause infertility by inhibiting ovulation. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet is important for controlling both PCOS and inflammation. Dr. Datta recommends a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Foods such as green leafy vegetables, berries, and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation. Conversely, processed foods, sugary snacks, and refined carbohydrates should be avoided as they promote inflammation.
Exercise and lifestyle
Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to fight inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity. Light to moderate exercise such as walking, swimming and cycling can help control weight and reduce inflammation levels. In addition, maintaining a regular lifestyle, getting enough sleep and avoiding harmful habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption also play an important role in reducing inflammation.

Stress Management
Chronic stress can worsen inflammation. Techniques like yoga, meditation and deep breathing can help control stress levels and reduce inflammation. “Ensuring adequate rest is important to reduce the chronic inflammation associated with PCOS,” says Dr Datta.
