You may be wondering if you can get pregnant without having sex for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you’re nervous about having unprotected sex, you’re in a same-sex relationship, or you want to avoid painful sex due to conditions like vaginismus or vulvodynia.
Regardless of the situation, it’s important to know that you can technically get pregnant even if you don’t have sex. While semen needs to be as close as possible to the cervix to get pregnant (such as after intercourse), it’s still possible to get pregnant if semen gets closer to the vagina or vaginal opening. This is called an “ectopic pregnancy.” Additionally, pregnancy can also occur through intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Read on to find out more about how to get pregnant without sex, whether you want to have sex or avoid it.
Can you get pregnant without having sex?
In some cases, pregnancy can occur without intercourse. For example:
- Ejaculation occurs just outside the vagina, and the sperm swim into the reproductive tract.
- Semen is on the finger and inserted into the vagina
- The erect penis touching the vaginal area (a small amount of semen is released before ejaculation, and this pre-ejaculation semen can technically lead to conception)
Remember that your chances of getting pregnant are highest when penile-vaginal intercourse occurs near ovulation, when the ovaries release a mature egg, about the middle of your menstrual cycle. While eggs can survive in your reproductive tract for 12-24 hours, sperm can survive up to five days after intercourse. This means you can get pregnant if you have sex on the day of ovulation or five days before (called your “fertile window”).
You can determine when you’re ovulating by using an online calculator, recording your basal body temperature, trying an ovulation predictor kit, or other methods.
What is water pregnancy?
A “splatter pregnancy” or “virgin pregnancy” is a pregnancy that occurs without penetration, but instead by penile stimulation and ejaculation near the vaginal opening (either accidentally or intentionally).
Pregnancy through artificial insemination
Another option to get pregnant without having sex is artificial insemination, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI). In IUI, prepared sperm are introduced directly into the uterus using a catheter. IUI can be timed to coincide with ovulation, or fertility medications can be used to increase your chances of conception.
Couples can also try in vitro fertilization (IVF), a procedure in which sperm and eggs are mixed in a laboratory and the fertilized egg is then implanted in the uterus, where conception occurs when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining.
It is important to note that IUI and IVF can also be used to treat infertility.
It is possible to get pregnant without having sex, but you cannot get pregnant by sitting on a toilet, swimming in a public pool, using a hot tub, or bathing in any other body of water.
What to do if you think you might be pregnant
If you think you might be pregnant, the first step is to take a pregnancy test. For the most accurate results, wait until your period is late. If the pregnancy test is negative, consider waiting a few days and taking it again. If you take a pregnancy test too early, your pregnancy hormone (hCG) may not be high enough to be detected.
Early pregnancy symptoms are similar to those of PMS and may include:
- Vaginal bleeding approximately 10 to 14 days after conception (implantation bleeding)
- Mild cramps
- Chest pain
- Mood swings
- tired
- Dysfunction
- nausea
- Food cravings or aversions
- Pee more frequently
- headache
If you have any concerns, talk to your healthcare provider. Doctor-administered pregnancy tests, especially blood tests, can detect pregnancy sooner than over-the-counter tests.
Prevent unwanted pregnancies
If you’re worried you might get pregnant after unprotected sex (even non-penetrative), you may want to consider taking emergency contraception. Some brands are available over the counter. Emergency contraception can be taken up to five days after sex (again, this varies by brand).
